The Area

Welcome to Portland. Work, Live, Play…What we do around here

Portland, MI

Portland, also known as the “City of Two Rivers”, is the home to many historical monuments. It is located in southeastern Ionia County between Grand Rapids and Lansing, next to two connecting rivers, the Looking Glass River and Grand River. The downtown area features many historic buildings, and an old-fashioned town clock that faces the popular Veterans Memorial Bridge on Bridge Street.

Portland River Walk

Looking for a great way to explore the many natural parks and bridges? The Portland River Walk provides just that. It is a network of well-maintained paved trails built on an abandoned railway that once connected Portland to Ionia and Lansing. The trails are nearly nine miles in length!

The Opera Block

The Opera Block is located between Grand River Rd and Bridge Street and comprises the buildings on the even side of the 100 block of Kent street. As the name implies, this historic block also contains the much loved, Portland opera house, one of Michigan’s oldest opera houses. This unique block, which is also adjacent to the Grand River, is undergoing significant rehabilitation to become the Mecca of dining and entertainment in and around Ionia county.

The History

Portland is a city in Ionia County of the U.S. state of Michigan. Portland has been home to several Native American tribes, and was the dwelling-place of John Okemos in the 1850s. The first train arrived in Portland in 1869, the last train left in 1984 when the tracks were removed. The railroad bridge built in 1881 remains, having replaced an earlier wooden bridge built in 1869.
